I bought the queen size version of this exact futon on eBay for $125.
Amazon did not offer bigger sizes. I wanted more room for me to sleep
and if I had company over they could share it with me. It fits two
people very well. These are the dimensions to the futon I bought 3"
thick x 60" wide x 80" long.
My sister lives in Japan so she gave me advice on what kind of futon to get and this is the one I picked.
PROSPECTIVE BUYERS:
-These are very comfortable. This is so close to a bed I can't feel the difference.
-Skip the inflatables, cots, and what-nots. You don't have to worry about pumps and punctures.
-I highly recommend them for ANY usage (everyday, when company is over, college, camping trips etc.)
-Easy to store and transport. Just roll it up and bam! done. You can carry it alone.
-I tested my futon on carpet and on hard floors. It's just as comfortable either way.
-A lot cleaner than beds
-It's really affordable and you will have it for a long time.
CONCERNS I HAD BEFORE I MADE MY PURCHASE:
-I didn't think it would be comfortable:
**It's very comfortable and the closest I could get to a real bed.
-I thought the material inside would be saggy and it would be like sleeping on the floor or a sleeping bag:
**The padding keeps its thickness and doesn't sag at all. It is very supportive and plush.
-I was concerned about the toxic chemical smell some reviewers mentioned:
**My futon did not have a toxic smell. It has a very light woodsy scent due to the cotton. It goes away and you can just air it out.
-I wanted it to be authentic:
**The style is authentic and it's traditional. But they obviously aren't made in Japan or shipped from Japan. This was alright with me because I didn't want to pay an extra $100 for shipping if I wanted one from Japan.
AFTER A MONTH OF EVERYDAY USE:
-It's still just as comfortable and I fall asleep right away.
-I don't have any complaints and I don't wake up sore.
-I'm even considering never owning a bed again.
-The smell is completely gone.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
-I use a fitted bed sheet on mine to protect the cover and I didn't want it to get dirty.
-I bought mine in black because I thought it would be more durable and not show dirt/stains.
-Air your futon out every so often.
-I'm 20 and I'm 5'5 137lbs. It's good for me. My mom came to visit for a couple of days and she slept on it for 3 nights. She is 48 5'10 and probably around 170lbs. She said it was comfortable for her as well. I can't say much for older or heavier people. I'm sure it would be just as comfortable.
-Japanese futons are suppose to be very good for your back.
-You can buy extra covers on eBay so you can wash and replace them if it gets damaged. You can also buy different colors.
***remember I bought the queen size on eBay. It's the exact same thing just 33" wider and 5" longer.

The outer fabric is not as strong as the one I purchased from ebay, but it is still strong enough. My futon from ebay has a canvas-like material which was extremely durable.
If you do not want to spend the money on a J-Life futon, this is well worth the money. I am very happy with this product. Very comfortable and great to lay on when y back is aching. Rolls up and stores nicely. Yes, it does have a kind of funky smell when you first open it but I aired mine out a bit and it was just fine! I just received the Futon today I was very impressed with how comfy it is but upon opening it my whole house smelled of rotten milk I instantly got out the Lysol and sprayed it extensively with it. It has an easy opening for access for adding more stuffing I suppose but its pinned down in 6 spots in the middle so you can only reach about an inch in to the cotton. If you can deal with the horrible smell this is a very good alternative to the other more expensive futons out there. The ass was fat on the futon too. So to star it arrived a day early so that got it bonus points for me. As for the actaul product I layed down to test it and fell asleep. It is very good for something you lay on the floor. As for the comments on the smell i had to shove my noise into it to smell and really it wasnt bad. Kinda smelt like saw dust to me. Finally it rolls up to a nice size so I really have no complaints. It took me about a week to get used to sleeping on this futon mattress, but after that, a lot of my aches disappeared! I love this mattress, and it is so easy to roll and tie to use as a chair or even put away so I have more floor space in the end.
I have used this as my every-day bed for about a month and it seems to be durable. It's soft. It saves an amazing amount of space. And best of all - I didn't have to spend hundreds of dollars while on a tight budget to have an area to sleep. My daughter has had it for a month or so now. I layed down on it and it is really comfortable. It came quickly, seems well made and it is comfortable, and I was surprized to be honest. My daughter likes it very much, and if she is happy so am I. She is 23 and does not mind letting you know if she likes something or not. She told me it is going with her when she moves to Japan. I am assuming she really likes it. I couldn't be happier with this futon. I have a platform bed that I mostly sleep in but sometimes I just can't fall asleep in the bed, so I pull this futon out of the closet, unroll it on the floor, and fall asleep on it. Like a lot of reviewers have said, it's not what I would call "plush" but frankly, I don't want that. I have slept on futons on the floor and platform beds with futon mattresses for the last 25 years. I really like this futon because 1) the cover comes off and is washable 2) it rolls up nicely and can be stored in a closet, and 3) it's quite comfy. It is so much better than inflatable mattresses for guests too. I originally bought this pad because it has a stated length of 80 inches and 30 inches wide. However, when I measured it upon arrival it was 75" by 27" which are the same dimensions as other ones. I am 6'2" so it is a little short for me but would be acceptable for someone of a smaller stature. It is also a little harder than I thought it was going to be so I would recommend getting one of the pads if this is going to be an every night, or even a weekend, sleeper. For me, being a side sleeper, it is not particularly comfortable. As for the smell, it was unnoticeable after a day. I would recommend it as a pad to bring camping or for guests, but by itself it is not ideal for every night use. I'm a college student on a budget, so for nearly a year, I've been sleeping on air mattresses.
They don't last very long, and it grew to be too much of a money drain to keep replacing them every 4 months.
Mind you, I'm 6'2 and 300lbs, so I guess I should have expected them to fail, regardless of how rugged they claimed to be.
So looking for alternatives (I checked out military grade cots, bean bag beds, etc) I found this product, and decided that this was reasonably priced, and sounded durable enough for my needs. (I don't have to worry about it getting a tear and deflating, or melting, or my cat popping it.)
I received the bed yesterday, and after a whole night with it, I'm pretty pleased. (of course, if I get upset with it, I'll update this review to reflect my change in opinion.)
Its important to note that you do need to buy a foam mattress to go with this, The 'Shikibuton' Amazon recommends you buy with this product works fine (if a little smaller than the futon mattress), but its cheaper than some of the larger alternatives out there.
