I will be purchasing more of these in the near future to have spares for guests. I can't say enough good about this mattress. Perfect comfort, fold up during the day if you wish, layer several if you want to be higher off the floor or use it on a platform. This arrived vacuum-sealed in a package so compact, I thought they sent me the wrong item at first. However as soon as you unwrap it, it inflates to normal size (3x27x75). It made my shiki futon even more comfortable than a regular bed mattress. After 1 month of use, there is no deforming at all.
I still think heavier-than-average people wouldn't want to sleep on this, but it's perfect if you weigh under 150 lbs or so.
I bought this shikibuton while moving out of a dorm and into a house,
as I had no bed of my own and didn't feel like buying/lugging a whole
bed into my new place. The shikibuton is surprisingly soft, not as soft
as a regular floor futon, but more firm. It is a bit short; I'm 5'8, and
with pillows added I just barely fit stretched out. It folds up nicely
as well. At first it does have a strong chemical odor which seems to
have bothered other purchasers, but it doesn't bother me, and it goes
away in time. It's also more absorbent than one would think. As for
delivery, it reached me in time and in good shape, though unwrapping it
from the plastic is an adventure. An excellent buy, overall, one I'm
glad I made.
Well, this is actually decently comfortable. It doesn't look like it, and the two "seams" when it's unfolded make you think it will feel lumpy. But it doesn't. And if you close your eyes, you don't even realize how close to the group you are. It's got a nice firm mattress feel to it.
It is not large of course. At 5'9, I find it just barely long enough for me. And it's narrow too. But I could do it and sleep on it and it's better than most couches.
When folded it is more like a low end table than as a functional seat. I really don't see it as working as a chair when folded at all. I keep it next to the sofa and keep folded blankets and magazines on it.
Overall, a good buy for a functional bare-minimum guest bed. Like other buyer said... i thought they sent the wrong package but when unbox... it is as what it is. There is a strong chemical odor which i cannot take it... i took out the foams , wash the cover and put the foam under the sun.. after a day and put it back...all the chemical smell gone. Lastly, it comfortable to sleep. I use this as the main bedding for a small room I rent when I work out of town, and it is remarkably comfortable. I bought an extra one thinking I might need more width to be comfortable, but it turns out I don't need it. It's great for extra bedding when you don't have alot of room. A reliable seller. This is a very convenient, mobile bed. My husband and I do a lot of traveling/camping and we sleep in the back of our Toyota Sienna minivan. With stow-and-go seats, the floor is very flat and the area is large enough for two adults to sleep comfortably. Because the mats are high-density foam, they do not sag under our weight. We just put the two mats side-by-side and you have an instant bed. They are more comfortable than the mattresses at most hotels. Yes, they had a strong odor when we first took them out of the bags, but we just aired them out for a few days and the odor dissipated. The other benefit is that once we arrive at our destination, we can fold them both up on top of each other and they make a very comfortable chair. They were well worth the money. I bought two because when I put them next to each other under the mattress pad they are as good as any full bed I've slept on and can fit two adults with no gapping, sliding around, etc. A perfect night's sleep. A million times better than a futon bed or sofa bed because there aren't any springs, better than an air mattress because they stay warm and you don't sink anywhere.
But when my sister's kids come to visit, or guests that aren't related and don't want to share a bed, I can just use both shikibutons separately and they work just fine by themselves. Or, if for some reason a guest preferred sleeping with both cushions on top of each other for extra height, they could do that, too. (I've not had anyone need to do that yet since one by itself is a fine bed, but you never know). That's why I went with two of these instead of one in a bigger size on ebay.
Know that they are incredibly firm. A mattress pad is a good addition - I don't mind the firmness but I think some people might want it softened up a bit. After sleeping on one, I could see why people buy these to get good sleep for their back. They're much firmer than you'd expect from their thickness. And they ship in a tiny box all shrink wrapped and then expand a bit, so don't panic when you see them in that little box. We store ours between the couch and the wall in a little stack when we're not using them and they fit nicely and are unobtrusive, plus they double as extra seating. I would recommend this to ANYONE with limited space who wants a quick easy guest bed that's not uncomfortable like many futons and most sleeper sofa beds. If I were a person who moved around a lot, I'd even buy two of these and the mattress pad and use them as my full-time bed. They are great.
